Web3 - Do you Really Need it as a Web Developer?

How the Crypto stole Web 3.0

Posted on January 5, 2022November 18, 2023 by Toma Velev

As technical individual with experience more than 13 years – I’ve heard the term Web 3.0 before the crypto technology was ever named with that label. I studied informatics bachelor degree 2005 and 2009, and master degree 2009-2010. During my master degree the cryptocurrency was at an entry point – new birth. It existed before but it was too technical & niche. After the year 2009 the Crypto got new evolution. In 2010 it raised into popularity because of Satoshi Nakamoto and his white paper that resolved the Byzantine Generals Problem.

Web 3.0 Was – Agents & Autonomous Software

While I was studying – the Web 3.0 was the Semantic Web. The university researchers imagined a world where technology will be able to have common knowledge and intelligence. It was partially implemented with RDF. It evolved in semi-semantical & semi-standards. You could archive autonomy by implementing agents. I’ve studied Jade, where Autonomy is wrapped in a Java Thread that “receives” messages and reacts according to the programmed behavior. There are of course alternatives – like the modern Micro Service with Messaging Architecture.

SEO microdata markup

The Web Part ended up in simple HTML attributes to the elements that add some partial semantic. The pages are parsed by the search engines and displayed more beautifully than a normal hyperlink.

Software Intelligence

Where it did end is – mostly currently proprietary systems. This is because of the huge data that the software must be fed with so it could create really smart domain systems that act truly intelligently within concrete area. You could see many examples in 2022:

  • Tesla for autonomous driving
  • Goggle with all the public internet
  • Facebook with all the Social media links
  • Instagram with all the photos
  • LinkedIn with professional skills
  • Twitter, clubhouse with other.

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence is the marketing term of a professional software systems optimized with algorithms and data to accomplish their work.

Ontological systems and software development designs

There are several spaces in software where it could be labeled Semantic.

  • Search Engines try to guess what the user wants with Natural Language Processing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_search_engines#Semantic
  • Well defined https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finite-state_machine that describe how software works or evolves. The bloc design pattern in Flutter is such pattern where all interactions and states are self-describing.

Cryptocurrencies is the ownership of data – current Web 3.0

The cryptocurrency technologies allow potentially – true verified digital ownership, power and control. But, what is mostly advertised and used is:

  • APY (annual percentage yield),
  • getting rich platforms, services, ideas, and
  • total shit coins and well masked Ponzi Schemes.

It is basic human psychology.

So here is the evolution of the technology

We could build automated systems that take our job away from us. They could let us live effortlessly, joyfully and freely. But, we are stuck fighting with:

  • endless technical changes and adaptation
  • marketing of product,
  • branding of companies
  • user interface design and client support
  • work for money – so we could get food and shelter

Web 3.0 could be ownership and control, but it needs a lot of software, awakening for the need, education and more. It is an area that could change the whole world. But for this – it will require a lot of willpower – beyond the simple effort of learning.
